From China
The indigo plant. Ban lan gen is the root of woad - the plant Europe used to dye cloth blue for centuries before indigo arrived from India. The same genus, put to a completely different purpose at the other end of the continent. China grew it for the dye too, and then kept the root.
It is one of the very few herb names that people in China who know nothing about herbs still know by heart - packets of ban lan gen granules sit in every pharmacy and most kitchen drawers. These are grown in Heilongjiang, in the far northeast.
How it is used: the pale sliced root is simmered into a decoction, alone or with honeysuckle. Bitter and cooling.
