From China
Guard against the wind. Fang feng translates directly as guard against wind, which is one of the more evocative names in the whole pharmacopoeia. Wind, in classical Chinese medicine, is the word for anything that arrives suddenly from outside and moves around the body. The name is the job description.
It is another member of the carrot and parsley family, like a surprising number of the great Chinese roots, and it grows across the cold northern grasslands. The dried root is pale and fibrous, marked at the head with a dense ring of old leaf bases that collectors call the mule head.
How it is used: simmered into a decoction with other herbs, rarely alone. Sweet at first, then acrid and warming.
