From China

The gentle ginseng. Tai zi shen means prince ginseng, and the name is about scale as much as status. The roots are small, pale and slender, nothing like the forked man-shape of true ginseng, and Chinese practice treats this as the mild one - the root traditionally given to children and to anyone considered too frail for ginseng proper.

Botanically it is not ginseng at all. It belongs to the carnation family, which puts it closer to a garden pink than to Panax. Most of the good material comes from Fujian, Jiangsu and Anhui.

How it is used: simmered into mild soups and decoctions, often with jujube. Sweet, soft, and far less assertive than ginseng.
