From China
Ningxia, and nowhere else. Almost all goji worth eating comes from one river valley in Ningxia in north-central China, where the alkaline soil and hard sun produce a berry sweet enough to eat by the handful. The Chinese have kept records of the harvest there for over six hundred years.
In Chinese medicine it belongs to the small group of herbs mild enough to take every day, and it is one of the few that crossed into ordinary cooking - dropped into congee, soups and tea without anyone thinking of it as medicine.
How it is used: eaten dried by the handful, steeped in hot water as a tea, or simmered into soups and porridge. Sweet, slightly tart, faintly like a dried cherry.
